Wickhampton church: talk by Imogen Corrigan

Pilgrimage and travel in the Middle Ages.

We are delighted to welcome once again medieval historian Imogen Corrigan, who will educate and entertain us with her talk entitled "The hazards of the journey".

What possessed people to trudge hundreds of miles, often in appalling conditions, and sometimes perishing on the way?

Imogen will consider this question and also how there was a shift from spiritual wandering in the Anglo-Saxon period, to religious tourism in the days of Chaucer's pilgrims. How did people organise themselves for long journeys, and how safe was it to travel? Who was travelling and why, and what did they take with them?

From maps and motivation to souvenirs and shrines, this talk discusses travel in the round as well as specifically for spiritual reasons.

Tickets: £7.50 on the door (cash please) to include light refreshments.
